An Invitation to Conduct Military Operations Research

at the Naval Postgraduate School:

Doctoral, Postdoctoral, and Visiting Scholar Positions

 

The Operations Research (OR) Department of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) offers positions for exceptionally qualified applicants for doctoral, postdoctoral, and visiting-scholar positions in military operations research, homeland security, logistics, search and detection, and autonomous systems. These positions offer unique access to and opportunities for research on exigent real-world problems at all classification levels in collaboration with active-duty military officers from all uniformed services, civil servants, personnel deployed overseas, and academic military operations researchers who are the leaders in our field.

 

NPS OR is an operations research center of excellence in the Department of Defense, and is renowned for its dedication to solving exigent real-world military operations research problems. NPS is a fully accredited technical university with a highly motivated student body consisting of military officers and government employees from the U.S. and allied countries. The OR Department offers MS and PhD degrees and is one of the largest in the country with its 150 graduate students (each writes a thesis), 25 tenure-track faculty, and 19 full-time adjunct faculty (including retired, experienced senior military officers). The faculty include a member of the National Academy of Engineering, three INFORMS Fellows, and three Koopman Prize winners. These scholars have made seminal contributions to our military, ranging from open-literature articles, to classified publications and decision support software: ultimately, they influence defense policy at the highest levels.

 

NPS is located on the Pacific coast in Monterey, California, about 120 miles south of San Francisco.

 

Research Assistant Positions for PhD Students

The OR Department invites applicants for Research Assistant positions leading to a PhD degree in operations research. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, operations research, applied mathematics, or a related field and will be research oriented. Prior experience with military operations research is preferred, but not required. The positions are especially well-suited for active-duty and transitioning military officers with interest in pursuing a career in research and teaching. Successful applicants will become federal employees for their multi-year tenure and will receive associated benefits. The positions start September 2008 or January 2009 and are restricted to U.S. citizens. Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Positions

The OR Department invites applications for one-year Postdoctoral positions in operations research with the possibility for extending the tenure. The positions consist of a combination of research and teaching of graduate-level courses in the OR Department as negotiated with the candidate. Candidates should hold a PhD in operations research or a related field and have a strong interested in solving real-world problems. Prior experience with military operations research is preferred, but not required. Applications are currently being considered. Employment will begin as early as July 2008 and is restricted to U.S. citizens. Compensation will depend upon candidate’s qualifications and experience. National Research Council Postdoctoral Associateship Positions

The OR Department and the National Research Council invite applicants for Postdoctoral Associateship positions. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in operations research or a related field and have a strong interest in solving real-world problems. The positions are awarded by the National Research Council and the research is carried out in the OR Department under guidance of our faculty. These positions are open to U.S. citizens as well as foreign nationals who hold permanent resident, F-1 and J-1 status. Visiting Scholar Positions

The OR Department invites faculty at U.S. and foreign universities to join NPS for 3-12 month visits to work on real-world operations research problems. A visitor can work with the OR Department’s highly experienced military-officer students and, with proper clearance, utilize our classified research facilities.
